Is your child or teen getting into trouble at school or in the community?
Has the discipline that has worked for your other children failed repeatedly with one of your children?
Does your child or teen have a history of being oppositional and or defiant?
Is your child self-harming by cutting, or showing signs of an eating disorder?
There are many reasons why a child “acts out”. In some cases, it is a biochemical reason, which could require medical intervention. In some cases, it might be abuse or bullying at school. In some cases, it could be experimentation with drugs. However, in many cases, your child may be reacting to a situation at home, such as parental conflict, substance abuse, death of a loved one, or sudden crisis, such as economic change, moving, or family mental or physical illness.
Children find it difficult to express their feelings by talking about them. Play therapy can be successful for many children and in some cases, even teens. Having worked with the school system for many years, I have participated in Response to Intervention meetings (RTI), 504 Accommodation meetings, and IEP meetings. I have also participated in Baker Acts, when necessary.
I use a variety of techniques for treating Behavioral Problems, including Play Therapy, Family Therapy, assessment for ADD/ADHD, and referral to other specialists. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has been successful for older children and teens, as well.
If you are at the end of your rope with your child, or children, call today for a consultation and an appointment. Raising children doesn’t come with an instruction manual, and I have had personal experience with children and grandchildren who have had a variety of problems over the years. Don’t try to ignore it, thinking they will grow out of it. It is harder than ever to be a child growing up in this day and age!
