What is Puppet Assisted Relationship Therapy?

Puppet Assisted Relationship Therapy was created by Dr. Anne Pesacov to teach social skills to children adolescents and young adults with Asperger’s Syndrome, high functioning Autism and related neurological disorders such as NLD and Sensory Integration Disorder.

The Puppets From the Planet Earthtm were designed to address the skill deficits common to this population and include the main character, Alien Nate, and the friends who help him learn how to live on earth. Joe What Do you Know?, Camille, how do you feel??, Jose, what do you say?, Su, what do you do?, and Lincoln, what are they thinkin? teach Nate through stories and scripts.

Skills are taught in Social Skills Groups by age. Basic communication skills, handling emotions,getting along with others are some examples of younger age level skills. Higher level skills for adolescents and young adults include topics such as personal hygiene, making plans with others, overcoming roadblocks to independent living and many more. The stories and scripts may be found in the manual co-authored by Dr. Pesacov, titled Puppet Assisted Relationship Therapy; a manual for teaching social skills to individuals with Aspergers Syndrome and related disabilities. Dr. Pesacov and her puppet assisted relationship therapy social skills groups have been seen on TV, and featured in the local newspaper.

Social Skills groups meet weekly or monthly by age range: 6-10, 11-14, 15-18, young adults.
